The Cross Country Center at the
Mt. Shasta Board & Ski Park
offers 20 to 40 kilometers of groomed Nordic trails for nordic and
skate skiers during winter and into the spring. The Nordic Lodge
offers ski lessons, snacks and drinks and equipment rentals,
including cross country and skate skis, snowshoes and an insulated

Back country areas are increasingly popular for telemark and nordic
skiers, boarders and snowshoers. Guided backcountry ski instruction,
trips and avalanche awareness seminars are available from many guide
services...see the
Mountaineering
page on our website.
Couloir Magazine featured Mt. Shasta and described it as one of the
top back country skiing mountains in the world. Back country skiiers
should check with the Forest Service's
Mt. Shasta
Wilderness Backcountry Report
for up-to-date information on back-country skiing in Siskiyou
County.

Snowshoes
Snowshoeing is being rediscovered as an excellent winter sport.
New high tech equipment is available for rent or sale in outdoor
equipment stores in Mt. Shasta. The best places for snowshoeing,
according to local enthusiast, Mark Gibson, is at Bunny Flat on Mt.
Shasta, and around Castle Lake in the Eddys west of I-5.
Those who prefer a more "civilized" backcountry experience can
explore the greatly expanded 12 kilometer network of snowshoe trails
at the
Mt. Shasta Board & Ski Park's
Cross Country Center. These trails are open to both snowshoers and
skiers...even dogs are allowed!

Snowmobile
Snowmobilers are coming to Siskiyou County from as far north as
Washingtion State and from Southern California. More than 250 miles
of trails make up a network that can be accessed from four different
trail parks: Deer Mountain off Highway 97 south of Macdoel, Pilgrim Creek off Highway 89 east of McCloud, Medicine
Lake Link (Four Corners) 28 miles east of McCloud, and
Doorknob north of Lava Beds National Monument. Warming huts are
located at each park, and nearly 130 miles of trails are groomed by
the Forest Service. Contact local ranger stations (listed in the
Information Centers at our
Services
pages) for maps and guides.
For local snomobile information, visit the
Mt. Shasta
Sno-Mobilers Club...they'd
like to share with you our 300 miles of groomed trail system in
Siskiyou County, California.
Another site of interest is the
Fun Factory,
with snowmobile rentals at Deer Mountain, guided tours, and special
events including full moon rides, skiing, snowboarding, and
overnight excursions with lodging!
Ice Skating
Skate
seven days a week, November through March, at the largest outdoor
ice rink on the west coast. Located in Mt. Shasta at Shastice Park,
behind the High School, the rink offers extraordinary views of Mount
Shasta, the Eddys and Black Butte. Skate rentals are available. Call
the Mt. Shasta Recreation department at 530-926-2494 for
information.
Ice Fishing
Ice
fishing can be enjoyed on lakes where surface ice freezes thick
enough to safely support people. Driving access is plowed to Castle
Lake about Mt. Shasta, a popular winter destination for back country
skiing and boarding and snow shoe adventures. Access to Juanita Lake
in Butte Valley is unplowed, so plan to ski in to lakeside. Both
lakes are good bets for ice fishing by midwinter. Contact local
ranger stations (listed in the Information Centers at our
Services
pages) for maps and information. Always test ice thickness before
going beyond shallow water, and keep an eye on the weather!
Sled, tube and
toboggan
Sledding
is an important part of winter fun in Siskiyou County, and each
community will have favorite locations when the snow falls. Two
excellent sled runs are in south county: Snowman's Hill is at
the summit of Highway 89 between Mt. Shasta and McCloud, on the
south side of the road across from the Ski Park Highway
intersection. Ample parking, bathrooms and a crowd of happy sledders
make for an enjoyable adventure. Bunny Flat at the top of
Everett Memorial Highway on the slopes of Mount Shasta is also open
through the winter, with bathrooms, parking and gentle slopes. Be
sure to stay on public lands when you seek sled runs, and instruct
yourself in winter and sled safety. Sleds are not available for
rent, so bring your own, or stop by our friendly hardware and
variety stores to gear up. |
